Custody as Doctrine

How an asset is held is as material as why it is held. Custody is not an operational afterthought — it is the thesis, expressed in infrastructure.

By Marcus Okafor

In traditional finance, custody is plumbing — necessary, invisible, delegated. On the frontier, that assumption is a category error. When an asset is its own bearer instrument, custody is not a service you procure. It is a thesis you must build, and it is as material to the return as the entry price.

We state it plainly in the doctrine: how we hold an asset matters as much as why. A position held carelessly is not the same position held with discipline. They share a ticker and almost nothing else.

Custody is doctrine, not a checkbox.

Operating Doctrine · 02

Engineer for the loss of any single thing

The design principle is adversarial. We do not ask whether a key, an operator, or a jurisdiction is trustworthy. We ask whether the position survives the loss of any one of them — and we engineer until the answer is yes.

QUORUM no single key, person, or device can move the position GEOGRAPHY separation across jurisdictions and legal regimes RECOVERY survivable loss of any one signer without loss of assets RESTRAINT never lent, staked into unknown risk, or rehypothecated

Custody design constraints

The discipline of doing less

The most important custody decisions are subtractions. We do not lend the core reserve. We do not chase yield that quietly transfers an asset's control to a counterparty we have not underwritten.

This restraint costs us. In a strong market it looks conservative, even slow. But custody is underwritten against the worst day, not the average one. The position that is still ours after the worst day is the only position that compounded at all.

Custody as a frontier in itself

Because the threat model is not static, neither is the doctrine. We hold a small position in post-quantum custody research not as a trade but as insurance — extending the doctrine across a longer horizon than today's standard contemplates. The frontier moves. Custody must move with it, or the assets it was meant to protect become the assets it failed to.
